three-way handshake

The method for initializing a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) session between two hosts on an Internet Protocol (IP) network. The three-way handshake synchronizes the sequence number and acknowledgment numbers of the two hosts establishing a connection, exchanges TCP window sizes, and exchanges other TCP options, such as the maximum segment size.
