steam thawing
A method of dredging permanently frozen ground in Alaska and the Yukon Territory in which steam is forced through pipes that are fitted with steel points on one end and a driving head on the other end so that the pipes can be hammered into the frozen gravel. Thawing by steam is a slow and costly process.
