A professional who directs and coordinates activities of news department of radio or television network or station. Responsibilities include:
- Confers with executives and production staff members regarding budget, station policy, news coverage of special events, and production problems.
- Originates or approves feature ideas and sends ideas to personnel of assignment department for implementation.
- Monitors news development and reviews edited copy and news film.
- Approves program content or issues directions for changes or modification.
- Coordinates news staff activities with radio or television programming, traffic, and film editing departments.
- Hires, discharges, and evaluates performance of news staff.
- May operate video equipment to review and approve news film or tape, using knowledge of usage of equipment.
- May write or type news copy, letters, and memos.
- May perform production duties or directly supervise those performing them in smaller station.
- May be designated according to media as Director, Radio News; Director, Television News.
