A professional who inspects animal hides, pelts, and slunk (unborn animal) skins for blemishes and grades them according to condition, size, and weight. Respnsibilities include:

  • Spreads hides, pelts, or skins on floor and examines or probes them with wooden skewer to detect defects, such as grub holes, cuts, brands, and residual meat and fat to determine grade.
  • Outlines defective areas on diagram.
  • Records grade of hide on tag according to condition, size, and weight, and attaches tag to hide.
  • May trim excess fat from flesh, and cut off snout, ears, and tail, using knife.
  • May place hides in curing vat.
  • May remove pituitary gland from split sheep skull, using knife.
  • May weigh hides on platform scale.
  • May record number and types of grades of hides on production sheets.
