A professional who weighs jockeys and riding equipment before and after each race to ensure that assigned handicapped weights have been carried during race. Responsibilities include:

  • Weighs rider and saddle on scale to assure that weight is as specified on racing program.
  • Directs rider to insert or remove lead pads from saddle pocket to meet specified weight.
  • Notifies racing officials of rider unable to meet weight limit.
  • Weighs rider and equipment after race to assure that lead pads were not lost during race.
