buoyancy frequency
In a continuously stratified fluid, the buoyancy frequency is the natural frequency of vertical oscillation of fluid parcels. Explicitly the squared buoyancy frequency is N^2 = -(g/ ho) d ho/dz, in which g is the acceleration due to gravity and ho(z) is density as a function of height z.
