A professional who directs and coordinates activities of workers engaged in construction and repair of railroad structures, such as bridges, culverts, tunnels, and buildings. Responsibilities include:

  • Plans work schedules for construction and maintenance projects.
  • Interprets and explains plans for construction of new projects.
  • Ensures that workers are supplied with tools, materials, and equipment for completion of construction or maintenance projects.
  • Ensures that railroad construction specifications are followed.
  • Dispatches workers and equipment to scenes of accidents to repair damaged bridges, tunnels, or right-of-way.
  • Investigates reports of damage or accidents to determine and correct cause, if attributable to faulty construction or maintenance.
  • Inspects right-of-way and structures to detect need for repairs.
  • Prepares reports of hours, equipment, and materials used to complete each construction or maintenance project.
  • May cooperate with engineering department to develop plans for new projects.
