Hipothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is more common in women, people with other thyroid problems and people over 60 years old.

Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune disorder, is the most common cause. Other causes include thyroid nodules, thyroiditis, congenital hypothyroidism, surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid, radiation treatment of thyroid and some medications.

Symptoms vary from person to person.

- These may include:

Fatigue

Weight gain

Swelling of the face

Cold intolerance

Pain in joints and muscles

Constipation

Dry skin

Thin and dry hair

Decreased sweating

Irregular or heavy menstrual periods and fertility problems

Depression

Decreased heart rate

To diagnose hypothyroidism, your doctor will review your symptoms and blood tests. The treatment is done with a synthetic thyroid hormone is taken daily.
